The traditional walleye fishing opener in many Midwestern states is like Super Bowl Sunday, and thousands upon thousands of eager anglers take to the lakes. Many will be hitting the water this weekend with high hopes of landing “The Big One” or just a limit of eaters.
This time of the year most of the active fish will be shallo 5 and less in most natural lakes across the northern part of the state. Everything from panfish to walleyes or pike. Some of the best areas to be searching for fish in the next coming weeks will be shallow rocks/wood or some early green weed growth. I can identify key spots and actually “shade” shallow flat areas from my LakeMaster map, then scan through those spots with my Humminbird ONIX unit set to Side Imaging and Down Imaging looking for those sweet spots. Windblown rocks or weeds will be best. I can cast these areas and when I locate some active fish, with the touch of a finger, my Minn Kota Talon immediately anchors up to 12 feet down and I can be setting the hook in seconds. Want to move quickly you ask? Another touch of the finger and the indestructible rod retracts back into my Talon and I’m moving sometimes only yards to another likely spot before repeating the process.
